Provence River Cruise: Golf, Wine & Classic France

C’est la vie in southern France on board the 18-passenger luxury barge Le Phénicien, as she cruises the Rhône River and the Rhône-Sete canal between Avignon and Aigues-Mortes. Our route will meander through the Provence and the Languedoc-Roussillon regions where thousands of years of culture, world-renowned wines, gastronomic food, unspoiled natural beauty – and splendid golf – await your arrival.

Le Phenicien blends the spaciousness of a larger river cruiser with the intimacy of a well-appointed canal barge. There are nine cabins with twin beds or king bed, and ensuite baths. The 1000-foot salon offers ample lounge seating, bar, and elegant dining all with panoramic views through large picture windows. Admiring the Camargue landscape from the teak sundeck is an experience you will remember.

Meals on Le Phenicien will be specially prepared by our Chef from selected local ingredients. Breakfast and Lunch is enjoyed by buffet, your gourmet dinner is served at table. You will discover a wide variety of local traditional specialties accompanied by choice local wines, Champagne and other sparkling wines.

Daily sightseeing excursions are highlighted by a guided tour of Avignon including The Palace of the Popes, residence of the Sovereign Pontiffs during the 14th century and the largest Gothic palace in the world. Astounding Roman antiquities are the subject of several tours; the gigantic aqueduct “Le Pont du Gard” and the city of Arles, known as “Little Rome in Gaul” for its considerable economic and religious importance to the Roman Empire which ruled Arles for over 700 years.
Aigues-Mortes is a walled Medieval town remarkable for the nearly perfect preservation of its Middle Ages construction. Our last excursion will take us in the deep heart of the wild Camargue.

There, we reach one of the most prestigious Manade, a typical ranch, where the horse guardians, authentic local cowboys, show how they tend the herds of bulls on their superb white horses.

The three rounds of golf you’ll play are every bit the match for this exceptional lifestyle experience. Ballesteros’ Pont Royal Golf Club, overlooking the village of Mallemort, is an excellently maintained championship layout featuring large bunkers and various water hazards across a hilly landscape. Strategy and accuracy are the keys to your round although longer hitters will find exciting risk/reward opportunities on several holes.

Itinerary:
Avignon-Aigues-Mortes itinerary on even weeks and reverse itinerary on odd weeks.

Sunday
Transfer from a defined picking point to Le Phénicien which is moored close to the Avignon ramparts. It is time for a little nap or a free visit of the city. Our first dinner on board gives an indication of the high standard of cuisine that will be served during the cruise and the accompanying wines have been specially chosen from top-notch local vineyards.

Monday – Pont Royal
Golf de Pont royal, 18 holes, PAR 72, 6303 m. Designed in 1992 by the great Severiano Ballesteros himself!
Then a first nice lunch cruise takes us closer to one of the best cellars of Châteauneuf-du-Pape where we have a guided visit followed by a wine tasting. This evening we sail to Villeneuve lès Avignon where we will stay overnight. The wines tasted in the morning are back on the table at dinner!

Tuesday – Grand Avignon
Golf Grand Avignon, 18 holes, PAR 72, 6046 m. Charming and quiet golf with bunkers and lakes. Uncommon covered practice area over water.
This afternoon, we get back to the barge and sail down to Vallabrègues a quiet and charming little port where it is good to rest, have a bike ride or play the pétanque under the plane trees.

Wednesday – Servanes
Golf de Servanes, 18 holes, PAR 72, 6121 m. Top ranking French golf and the unique experience of playing golf within Cezanne’s favorite landscapes.
Back to the barge we pass through the huge 36 feet high lock of Beaucaire and sail down to Arles, the open-air Museum of Provence.

Thursday – Nîmes Campagne
Golf de Nimes-Campagne, 18 holes, PAR 72, 6200 m. Since 1969, definitely one of the most beautiful private golf courses in France lately opened to green cards.
The most impressive navigation is for today heading for the Camargue! We cruise the Rhône river, the petit Rhône and the canal to reach the quiet and typical village of Gallician.

Friday – La Grande Motte
Golf de La Grande Motte, 18 holes, PAR 72, 6161 m. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, this famous golf course meanders through The Camargue landscapes. Black bulls and pink flamingoes are not far.
Our final destination is Aigues-Mortes, a 14th century walled city rising from a flat landscape from which St Louis set sail on his Holly Crusades. The Camargue never fails to surprise and welcomes us for our farewell dinner!

About the golf courses:

Golf de Pont Royal: 18 holes, PAR 72, 6303 m.

Intelligence and subtlety, qualities of Severiano Ballesteros, are found in the course layout that the Spanish champion created and perfectly integrated in a nature alternatively wild and peaceful. The variety of tees offers to every player an adapted and stimulating challenge. Admirably maintained, classified among the best European golf courses, this course intelligently alternates tactical and technical difficulties, panoramic points of view and magnificent perspectives.

Golf Grand Avignon: 18 holes, PAR 72, 6046 m.
This non mountainous course will enable you to stay in good physical condition on the 18 holes but be careful on the out of bounds and water obstacles. Thanks to a fantastic climate, the course is open all through the year with an amazing view on the "Mont Ventoux". 60 hectares of vegetation, 5 lakes and a provençal vegetation (lavander, olive trees, cypress...) make it the most beautiful course in Vaucluse. The Golf Grand Avignon course enables all the golf lovers to enjoy this moment whatever their level is.

Golf De Servanes: 18 holes, PAR 72, 6121 m.

Magnificent 18 hole course designed by Ballesteros.
It benefits from an impeccable maintenance.
With rather wide bunkers, big trees, different water obstacles and a rather a chaotic relief, the whole under the constant influence of the wind, Royal Bridge asks for strategy and technique. It imposes to know well how to choose its clubs, what will be more difficult for novice players. Certain holes with very irregular drawing have to be negotiate before being approached. Good picnics in perspective for the warned players.

Golf De Nimes Campagnes: 18 holes, PAR 72, 6200 m.

Designed by the architects Morandi and Harradine, its inauguration took place in 1968.
The course is reputed for its greens and their difficulty, its narrow fairways, flanked by a colourful variety of trees. In 2003, the Golf of Nîmes Campagne was rated the 75th best golf course in Europe by the magazine Golf World, and the 26th best golf in France by the magazine Golf Européen.

Golf de La Grande Motte, 18 holes, PAR 72, 6161 m.

Architect: R. Trent Jones Sr. A course cleverly shaped on the edge of the wildlands of the Camargue.
Perfectly suited to all Handicaps
